Many people are seeking vegan personal care and household products as part of their vegan lifestyle or because they want more ethical, cleaner products. Veganism offers a way for consumers to show respect for their mind, body, and the animals we share this earth with. Ashland designed our criteria to help our customers find high quality, vegan suitable ingredients. Since veganism is a stricter form of vegetarianism, we consider our ingredients identified as vegan suitable also to be vegetarian suitable.

Surprisingly, vegan claims are not regulated. For this reason, many of our customers (e.g. finished goods manufacturers) look to vegan certification bodies or come up with their own criteria. Some of the vegan certification bodies that we have explored to create our criteria are listed in the links section. In addition, many vegan claims are often followed by or associated with cruelty-free claims. Cruelty-free claims are not regulated, either, although there are a few third-party certifications available. “Ashland does not test cosmetic products in animals unless legally required for regulatory compliance.” [Ashland animal testing policy statement 2018]. Ashland continues to work with regulatory bodies and industry bodies to find alternatives to animal testing.
