Pharmaceutical topical dosages contain a combination of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and inactive ingredients called excipients that help with the formulation, stability, and delivery of the APIs to the target site. 

Ashland topical dosage excipients include:

  • pharmasolve™ n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) that is used as both a drug solubilizer and penetration enhancer in human and animal topical dosage.

  • natrosol™ 250 h pharm hydroxyethylcellulose that is a thickener/viscosity modifier that helps provide the semi-solid consistency in gels, creams, and ointments.

  • povidone-iodine, a water-soluble complex of iodine and the polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), that is a widely used antiseptic and disinfectant agent with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. It is commonly used in medical settings as a general topical antiseptic used preoperatively, for treating wounds, hand hygiene, gargles, eyedrops, and mucous membrane disinfection.

  • klucel™ hpc that is a non-ionic water-soluble cellulose ether used as a thickening agent in topical applications.

  • allantoin™ usp that is a white colorless crystalline powder and a well-known skin and oral mucosa and wound care protectant. Allantoin usp meets current US Pharmacopeia (USP) and European Pharmacopeia (EP) monographs.
